Attachment: CDC Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) - Steps to Prevent Illness
Yesterday Governor Edwards released a statement and
conducted a press conference in relation to COVID-19.
Following a meeting of the Unified Command Group today,
Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a Public Health emergency in Louisiana related
to COVID-19. Commonly called coronavirus, COVID-19 has now
affected 13 residents in Louisiana. The current impacted parishes
include Orleans, Jefferson, Iberia, St. Tammany, Caddo and Lafourche. "We
currently have 13 presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in
Louisiana, including 7 new cases today. We are expecting more
cases in the coming days and weeks. As we learn more, we know that there
is community spread in Louisiana and I am asking all Louisianans to remain
vigilant and take important measures to protect their health and reduce the
spread of illness," Gov. Edwards said. "This is a constantly changing
situation, and we have been working with our state and federal health officials
for some time now. As we expect more presumptive positive cases, a declaration
of public health emergency is necessary to allow state agencies to thoroughly
prepare for any eventuality related to public health needs and deploy
additional resources to assist local authorities.” On March 9, 2020, a
Louisiana resident was tested for COVID-19 and deemed to be a presumptive
positive result in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention’s (CDC) protocol, resulting in the state’s first
case. Additionally, the declaration addresses efforts to prevent price
gouging should that become necessary as well as limits international travel for
state employees to Level 2 and Level 3 countries as designated by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC.
The City of Thibodaux would like to add some information
from the CDC to give residents a base of knowledge in reference to COVID-19. At this point, the most significant thing the
public can do is to understand what self-observation and self-monitoring are by following the CDC guidelines and practice good hygiene. The CDC.gov or
LDH.LA.gov are the best websites for information.
Symptoms compatible with COVID-19, for the
purpose of these recommendations, include subjective or measured fever, cough,
or difficulty breathing.
Self-observation means people should
remain alert for subjective fever, cough, or difficulty breathing. If they feel
feverish or develop cough or difficulty breathing during the self-observation
period, they should take their temperature, self-isolate, limit contact with
others, and seek advice by telephone from a healthcare provider or their local
health department to determine whether a medical evaluation is needed.
Self-monitoring means people should
monitor themselves for fever by taking their temperatures twice a day and
remain alert for a cough or difficulty breathing. If they feel feverish or
develop measured fever, cough, or difficulty breathing during the
self-monitoring period, they should self-isolate, limit contact with others,
and seek advice by telephone from a healthcare provider or their local health
department to determine whether a medical evaluation is needed.
Isolation means the separation of a
person or group of people known or reasonably believed to be infected with
a communicable disease and potentially infectious from those who
are not infected to prevent the spread of the communicable disease. Isolation for
public health purposes may be voluntary or compelled by federal, state, or
local public health order.
Quarantine in general means the
separation of a person or group of people reasonably believed to have
been exposed to a communicable disease but not yet symptomatic, from
others who have not been so exposed, to prevent the possible spread of the
communicable disease.
