THIBODAUX POLICE APPREHEND MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE AND KIDNAPPING

 

THIBODAUX - Members of the Thibodaux PoliceDepartment Criminal Investigation Division Friday arrested a Thibodaux man fortwo rape charges and aggravated assault. He was also charged with the aggravatedkidnapping of a Nicholls State University student that occurred Wednesday.  

As a result of weeks of investigation andintensified patrols, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Detective Laura Guise saw a manat Peltier Park matching the description given by the rape victims. Sheattempted to detain him and after a brief foot pursuit, Rennea Thompson, 21, of312 California St, Thibodaux, was apprehended. Detectives on the scenedetermined that a backpack he was carrying contained a pistol also matchingdescriptions of weapons used in other recent crimes. The bag also containedunused condoms and pornographic material. 

The subject was transported to the ThibodauxPolice station for questioning, where Thompson was charged with one count ofaggravated rape, one charge of forcible rape, one charge of aggravated assault.Nicholls State University Police later charged him with aggravated kidnapping.In the course of the questioning, Thompson confessed to all of the charges,except for the assault. 

The first incident, which resulted in theforcible rape charge, was reported on the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 9 in theChurch Street area on the west side of Thibodaux. The victim was a 15-year-oldgirl. 

The second incident also involved a15-year-old female victim and was reported on Friday afternoon, Sept. 17 in theCardinal Drive area on the east side of Thibodaux. This crime resulted in theaggravated rape charge. 

On the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 25, asubject matching Thompson’s description allegedly entered an adult noveltybusiness in the west side of Thibodaux and, at gunpoint, demanded that the clerkdisrobe. The clerk refused and alerted Thibodaux Police, at which time thesubject fled.  

On Wednesday, Sept. 29, Thompson reportedlykidnapped a Nicholls State University student getting in her vehicle.  

Thibodaux Police Chief Craig Melancon said,“The members of the Thibodaux Police Department have been working tirelesslyfor weeks to apprehend this individual who has victimized young children andothers in the community. As a result of these efforts, we were able to bringthis individual into custody and receive full confessions on a number of thecharges. I also want to acknowledge the role of the Nicholls State UniversityPolice Department and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to get to thispoint. We will work closely with the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’sOffice to bring these cases to a satisfactory conclusion.” 

Nicholls spokesman Michael Delaune alsocommented “On behalf of the entire Nicholls State University community, we aregrateful to the law enforcement professionals in the Thibodaux Police Departmentfor finding this suspect. The outstanding investigative and patrol work of allthe law enforcement agencies in the region help make our campus safer than mostin the state and nation.”
