POTENTIAL SCAM INVOLVING THE ELDERLY

In the past two weeks, the Thibodaux Police Department has received several complaints of two people going door to door offering free items.  These people are targeting the elderly citizens of Thibodaux.

In each case, these two people are going door to door acting as representatives of the medicade office and offering free wheelchairs, motorized scooters, or walking canes.  In return, the victims are asked to supply their medicade and medicare cards along with their social security cards.  The information from the cards is copied and then returned to the resident.

These two people are described as a black female approximately five feet five inches tall and weighing around one hundred fifty to one hundred ninety pounds.  She is well dressed and has been accompanied by two small children in some cases.  The black male is approximately five foot seven to five foot eleven inches tall and being of medium build.  He is also described as being well dressed.  They have both been seen leaving the different areas in a green or black van or sport utility vehicle.

As always, no one should ever give personnel information to a stranger.  A criminal in a number of different ways could use this information, for instance, applying for credit cards, applying for loans, or falsifying checks.

If someone believes that they have seen these two people, they are urged to call the Thibodaux Police Department at 985-446-5021 or telephone their local law enforcement agency immediately.
