EXCEPTIONALLYBUSY WEEKEND FOR THIBODAUX POLICE

 TheThibodaux Police Department had a busy weekend with a considerable amount ofcomplaints, accidents, arrest and issuance of traffic citations. BeginningThursday evening to Sunday night (April 25, 2002 to April 28, 2002), ThibodauxPolice handle the following number of criminal and traffic issues in the city. 

 161 Complaints

 37  Traffic citations(including 19 red light violations)

 18  Arrest

 50  Underage drinkingcitations issued

   6  Misdemeanor summons issued

 11  Auto accidents

 There wasspecial emphasis applied to the area of traffic enforcement.  In regards to the ending of the April National AlcoholAwareness Month, of the above mentioned arrest, three (3) were DWI arrest.

 The followingis a statement issued by Thibodaux Police Chief Craig Melancon:

 “With thenumber of traffic related citations and arrest this weekend, it is apparent thatthew creation of the department’s Traffic Division, and the goals andobjectives determined to be of a priority for the division, is needed to providesafety for our citizens as they travel on the city streets. 

 Itis imperative that citizens slow down and obey traffic signal devices.  It will simply save lives, reduce property loss, of courseprotection of life is our most important objective.

 The ThibodauxPolice Department intends to focus much energy in the area of trafficenforcement and I respectfully request that citizens take us seriously in howdetermined we are to address traffic safety as a whole.”
