FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE

JANUARY 10, 2002

The Thibodaux Police Department is announcing thecreation of a new Traffic Division.

EffectiveJanuary 9, 2002 a newly created Traffic Division became an integral part of theThibodaux Police Department. The division consists of two full time patrolofficers working primarily during the weekdays, with additional assistance ofregularly assigned officers.  Theofficers' primary focus will be enforcement, community policing and education oftraffic safety laws throughout the city.  Theachieved results will be to reduce speeding and the adherence of traffic laws, primarily in residential areas, school zones, and intersections by our citizensin order to reduce the number of traffic accidents and injuries citywide.

Over the course of the last year through initiativessuch as our Community Oriented Policing Strategy, better known as COPS, we havehad one on one dialogue with citizens where we have gathered information whichconcludes that a primary concern by a vast number of our residents is that ofspeeding and the overall impact speeding violations have in our community.

Thibodaux's Traffic Division will address thefollowing issues:

-        Reduce the number one safety related concern in the city as noted in ourCOPS Survey- Speeding.

-        Reduce the number of traffic violators and traffic accidents in the city.

-        Effectively manage and assign the department's current manpower toaddress public awareness, education, and enforcement of traffic safety laws.

-        Continue a more aggressive partnership with the educational and lawenforcement community to target elementary, junior, and senior high schoolstudents, as well as the general population.

By employing a Traffic Division within the Thibodaux PoliceDepartment and providing proper equipment, training and vision to the officersassigned, the city will implement an aggressive plan of action to promote, enforce and educate the community on matters of traffic safety.

The Traffic Division will also assist the police departmentin investigating areas around the city that warrant new signage, new enforcementstrategies and detailed information to be presented to the Mayor's office forreview and subsequent referral to our legislative body for changes which willenhance overall traffic safety.

I ask anyone with concerns about traffic related matters tocontact us at the Thibodaux Police Department and we will do everything we canto assist.
