THIBODAUX OFFICERS WITNESS ILLEGAL DRUGTRANSACTION
On12-7-2001 shortly after 5:00p.m., two Thibodaux Police Officers (one Officerbeing a Narcotics Detective) patrolling southbound on Canal Blvd near theintersection of St. Charles Street, observed two men standing in the vacant lotnext to 1313 St. Charles Street. As the Detective observed these two male subjects he noticed that itappeared that they were conducting an illegal drug transaction. The Detectivenoticed that one of the men was handing the other something which appeared to bevery small. The man had removed something from his pocket and started handing itoff. Thiswould be consistent with an illegal drug transaction.
Aftermaking this observation, the Narcotic Detective proceeded to investigate thepossible drug transaction. As the officer was approaching, one of the men fled on foot into a nearbyresidence. Asthe other also made an attempt to flee, the Detective exited his vehicle in theparking lot of 1313 St. Charles St. When the Detective exited his vehicle andapproached the other man to identify him, the officer observed him drop a clearplastic bag to the ground. At this time, a second officer detained the man and identified him asEric Smith 19, of 816 Church St, Thibodaux. One of the Narcotic Detectivesrecovered the plastic bag which contained four large rocks of suspected crackcocaine.
Thisillegal narcotics had a weight of 2.0 grams and an estimated street value of$200.00. Oncethe suspected crack cocaine was locate, the Detective placed Eric Smith underarrest for Possession with intent to Distribute Crack Cocaine. Eric Smith wastransported to the Thibodaux Police Department and booked with one count ofPossession with intent to Distribute Crack Cocaine and was transported theLafourche Parish Detention Center with no bond.
